Full Question
What are the steps my computer takes between me typing in a URL and seeing a rendered page?
Answer Step 1: Get the IP address
Your computer sends out a request to a Domain Name System (DNS) server to find the IP address that is paired with the domain name you typed in.
For example, if I want to go to yummly.com, my computer first connects with a DNS server and finds out that yummly’s IP address is: 54.243.91.244.
Not all DNS servers know all key value pairs for URLs and IP addresses. If the first DNS server doesnt know it will connect you with a larger DNS server! That’s how the internet originally worked, before URLs existed.
Note that if (for some reason) you know the IP address of the website you want to visit you can just type that into the search bar instead.
Step 2: Send info to the websites server
Your computer sends an HTTP GET request to the server for the found IP address.
Step 3: Get info back from the website’s server
In return, the server responds with data. For a website, this data would be the html, css, etc for the website.
The browser reads the data that the server sent and renders it to the page.
